New bed store comes to town

Vicki

Bedtime Bed Centre is now open in Hunstanton and with over 15 successful years in Wisbech and 4 years in Kings Lynn we decided it was time to branch out and give Hunstanton a new local bed store with good old fashioned service.

We sell a wide variety of beds, mattresses, bedsteads and can also make any size mattress for caravans and motor homes. Being a family run business we don't work on commission so you can feel free to pop in and have a browse without any high pressure sales. ...

Pantomania comes to Hunny

Peter James

Driving north on the A1 there used to be a sign reading ‘Robin Hood Country’. In the last few days, it has been relocated to the exit on the A17 and with good reason. Hunstanton’s very own pantomime was staged for six performances from January 6th to January 11th last and it was simply marvellous and a credit to the town. With a complement of 45 cast and crew, not counting the stylish ‘front of house’ and the 200 plus audiences, so skilfully incorporated into the prod...

Girlguiding - Brownies

We finished last term being Santa's Elves at Santa's Grotto in the Town Hall run by Hunstanton Lions, the Brownies had a lovely time and thoroughly enjoyed it.

At the time of writing we have yet to have our first meeting, however, the part of our future plans for next term are we will be trimming used stamps for Leprosy Mission and learning all about Leprosy, planning our Thinking Day Celebrations, and later on this term will be doing a Royal Wedding Challenge to earn a Royal Wedding Badge.

Full circle

Joanna

Well it is a full year since I wrote my first article for The Hunstanton Magazine, time does fly! Luckily I keep a copy of everything I write so I wont be repeating myself too much, I hope. I notice I talked about the Roman God Janus, he of the two faces, one looking forward and one back, it always seems to be a good idea in the first month of the year to do that. So here goes, it has been a good year in many ways, after the cold, cold beginning nature seemed to kick in and catch up.

Are you healthy?

Or do you just think you are?

We can all make resolutions to improve our diet, or take more exercise. But do you know what your actual risk of developing heart disease or diabetes is?

NHS Norfolk is offering an exciting new service: a free healthcheck for people aged 40 to 74 years old. We can check your weight, blood pressure, and measure your cholesterol and blood sugar levels. This allows us to calculate your risk of developing heart disease or diabetes. You can then be given tailored ...

Mayor's report

Cllr Peter Mallam

Hello - As I write the sun is shining and although still cold outside, residents of the town feel cheered by the promise of warmer days.

‘Sunny Hunny’ lived up to its name on Christmas Day with a very large turn out for the brave swimmers who included our very own Deputy Mayor! I was delighted to judge the Fancy Dress competition and share in the fun with not only residents but also a large number of visitors to Hunstanton choosing to spend their Christmas morning supp...

Canaries need to win more home games

John Maiden

No one can dispute the fact that the Canaries have done incredibly well since Paul Lambert took over as manager eighteen months ago. However, there have been times this season when they have failed to turn territorial advantage into the goals that would have yielded more precious points from their home games.

The Cardiff game was a classic example of this syndrome. After going behind in the seventh minute to an excellent goal from Jon Parkin, on his debut for the visitors, ...

News from Chives and the Wine Cellar & Deli

Nicki Bowman

Yes, I know its February and I'm a month late in saying that I hope you all had a very Happy Christmas and a great start to the New Year. So 2011, I wonder what this year will bring and how fast this one will past!  If like 2010 then extremely quick!

As I type this to you (rather late, Sorry Elaine!!) Chives is having a small make over ready for the start of the season, However, as it is February this means one thing to many a few things to others, but the one thing is VAL...

2010 A year of birds at Titchwell

Dave Hawkins, Visitor and Publicity Officer

As I write this in the first few days of 2011, it’s time for reflecting on how the reserve’s birds faired in 2010. Bitterns had a fantastic year and we were able to confirm successful breeding for the first time in a couple of years. During June, we had some of the most amazing views of the female bittern you could imagine. She chose to fish in the small pools twenty meters from the main path, on one occasion gathering an admiring crowd of ov...

The Film That Never Was

Ken Arnott

Those who lived through the 1939-45 war years will have their own stories to tell – or not tell. My story takes no time at all. I was in the Royal Navy from 1943-1946. I served on an aircraft carrier, a minesweeper and an anti-submarine frigate. I sailed in the Arctic, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean and one day I think I saw some smoke on the horizon! And that’s about it.

Admittedly there were some hair-raising crashes on the carrier when our planes returned from bombing ...

Passion and Love

Daniel Holland

(Assistant pastor at The Way CF)

An important date for husbands and boyfriends to remember in February is Valentine’s Day. As everybody knows it is a celebration of romantic love, a good time to give flowers, cards and chocolates to sweethearts. Don’t forget or you might be in the doghouse!

It is believed that St Valentine was a Christian priest in the time of the Roman Emperor Claudius II. Claudius was a warlike man and disliked marriage because it caused young men...

Nativity error?

In our lovely Christmas carol services, nativity plays and crib scenes in our Town Hall, churches and schools (and also this year in the four enjoyable ‘The Nativity’ programmes on BBC1) we all repeat a common historical error.

The wise men worshipped the new-born King at a later time than the shepherds, not with them. The gospel accounts are clear about this.

In St Luke’s gospel, the shepherds came to a ‘baby in a Manger’ whereas in St Matthew’s gospel the magi come to a ...

Rev.David Hulse

Minister of Union Church

How would we feel if we had a television with a blank screen? How would we cope without our daily dose of soap, sports programs or documentaries? This is the terrible fate awaiting all those who have not switched over from analogue to digital television according to letter that dropped through my door this morning. But panic ye not the BBC are going to make sure that we are correctly advised regarding the big ‘change over’ about to hit East Anglia in the near f...

Church of Our Lady & St Edmund with St Cecilia’s Dersingham

As many of you may have already heard via TV or radio, or read in the newspapers, our dear Bishop Michael has told us that he has only weeks to live. We have known of his battle with cancer for some years and prayers have been offered for him across the whole of the Diocese of East Anglia for all that time; now they have intensified. As Bishop Michael is doing, we await the fulfilment of God’s Will in the hope of th Resurr...

From St Edmund's church

Dear friends,

‘John, I need to come and speak to you,’ said the desperate voice on the end of the telephone message. Love them or hate them telephone answering machines are tools we can use. The force of the request demanded an immediate response. The person in need was a friend from schooldays who, like myself, still lives in the area. She needed to talk about something troubling her connected with the life of the church she attends. Her husband, although supportive, is not a Christian. ...

It's all in the genes

Lola Jones

“It’s all in the genes” they say. And perhaps, it is? Our daughter, Rhiannon, seemed to be the one who instead of inheriting ‘bad blood’ was a melting pot of all the good bits!

I am amazed how well she has been created. As a toddler, she spent many hours at riding stables as her father was an amateur jockey. She is now, not only an accomplished rider with a string of rosettes, but has an affinity with horses which has also proved to be very useful for her aspirations.
