Scent with love

Nick Godfrey-Cole

By the time this edition hits your mats; we will be well and truly be into autumn. My birthday celebrations will be a memory of a fantastic weekend spent in London, dinner with special family members and friends. The clocks will have changed so then the gloomy aspect of the fast approaching winter which will soon be upon us.

Before the dark mornings and even darker nights, we have the fabulous colours of late autumn to appreciate, the sights, sounds and smells of Bonfire...

Harvest for Haiti

Many of you will remember that Dr Andrew Murray went to Haiti earlier this year to help in the medical emergency that followed the earthquake. Much of what he and his colleagues did was reported in the Times newspaper and he also kept in touch with his friends here in Hunstanton by e mail.

So often we forget the people affected by disasters and emergencies around the world once the media spotlight moves on, but having someone in the town involved in Haiti made it seem a little closer to us.

Rev.David Hulse

Minister of Union Church

The Chilean mine rescue has commanded much of the news coverage over these past few days. The complete recovery of those trapped underground has been described as s. “A miracle. ” It has certainly been a great relief to see the men winched from their potential rocky tomb half a mile under a mountain. They have been brought from what was once total despair to Camp Hope where their loved ones plus political leaders and rescuers were waiting with open arms.

The wor...

£4,082.29!

That’s the amazing sum raised in the last year by Hunstanton Methodist Church for Autism Anglia. At a special service of praise and thanksgiving, the cheque was presented by Senior Steward Wallace Ward to the Bishop of Norwich, who is Patron of Autism Anglia. Thanking the church, Bishop Graham revealed that his strong personal concern for people with autism stemmed from a nephew having the condition. Like so many, he did not get an early diagnosis and for too long was simply regarded as a ve...

St Edmund's parish church

Dear friends,

One of my gripes is the abandonment of seasons. We live in an age where for most of us (in the west, at least) we can have access to goods and food all the year round. At the end of September one of our large retail outlets in the town were getting goods out ready for Christmass. By the beginning of October the goods were out on the shelves. I also had a conversation with someone at the same time which shows how we’re all losing touch with the seasons of the year. Looking at m...

Greetings from the manse

Anything to do with banks and bankers these days tends to catch our attention in a way that they rarely did not so very long ago. I read today that Frenchman Jérôme Kerviel the former trader, whose risky market betting on the international markets in 2007 lost his bank £4.1bn, has been gaoled for three years after a judge ruled he secretively broke rules and threatened the stability of his firm and the global financial order. But what really caught my eye was the order of the court for hi

Hope in the highlands

Daniel Holland assistant pastor at The Way

This summer my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed a holiday at Staffin, Skye in the West Scottish Highlands. We love the stark contrast with Norfolk, there are statuesque mountains speckled with purple heather, orange wild flowers, turquoise lochs, not to mention strange foreign foods! The passing places roads and slow place of life force us to gear right down and relax!

On our hikes we chatted to some of the welcoming locals. Apparently tourists are eas...

Hunstanton catholic parish

(Church of Our Lady and St Edmund, Sandringham Road, with St Cecilia’s, Dersingham)

September 19th was the day of our annual sponsored walk and a number of parishioners, well-fortified with home-made soup, set off on a circuit of Hunstanton in fine weather. A good time was had by all, and a useful sum raised for parish funds. Our thanks are due both to the walkers and to their very generous sponsors.

On the same weekend, of course, Pope Benedict made a state visit to this country. Two of ...

Praise for princess theatre

Hayley Johnston

As the summer is no more, we teenagers always find it hard to find something to do in Hunstanton. Summer activities are over and the cold weather means less and less people are around the town.

Recently it has emerged that the Majestic Cinema will be buying the Princess Theatre and transforming it into a traditional cinema with the new 3D cinema and they will be moving the pantomime to the Town Hall. Before this happened there were protests that the company who run both the ...

A page from the sage

Dick Melton

First of all, congratulations to all those people connected to the Hunstanton newsletter – now five years old!

Now, a little story about a lamp post. About two months ago a lorry backed into a lamp post in Willow Road and damaged the post. It was reported to the authorities and along came a man to survey the damage. About a week later, another man put up a new pole beside the old one. Then, ten days later yet another man came along and put a new lamp on the new pole....

Money well spent ?

I know I should get a life but instead I've been reading the latest instalment of the Borough Council's Core Strategy Submission Document

It is, like its many predecessors, a triumph of obfuscation, jargon, woolly thinking and contradiction.

How for example does it square – and I quote adjacent paragraphs - “(to) provide....quality year round employment with less reliance on seasonal/tourist activity” with - in the very next paragraph the intention to “.... stren...

Art group makes an impression on turnstone

In October I visited the Hunstanton Art Group, which was established ten years ago by local artist, Frank Gibson and the late Nick Bolsover. The members meet in St Edund's Church Hall on Wednesday mornings where they use a variety of different materials to produce some very impressive pictures - as shown in this photograph taken by John Scholes.

Current Secretary, Peter Dawson from Snettisham joined the Group four years ago after seeing the regular advertisement in the Lynn News.

The year of the pier

John Maiden

Giles Brandreth, a patron of the National Piers Society, wants 2011 to be the year of the Pier. If this happens it will serve as another poignant reminder that Hunstanton once had the most elegant Pier on the east coast.

When Jim Welham began writing a history of Hunstanton Pier in the February Newsletter, many readers must have expected to learn more from future instalments, but unless it is in this Newsletter, they will still be waiting for the next chapter.

Last month Jim ...

Blow away the cobwebs!

Dave Hawkins, Titchwell Marsh RSPB

We have a great programme of events lined up at Titchwell and Snettisham RSPB over the next couple of months.

Firstly, our famous Pinkie Breakfast walks at Snettisham start on 26 November and occur on a variety of dates until 12 January. The walks, which start just after dawn, go out to the beach on our Snettisham reserve to see the fabulous dawn flight of thousands of pink-footed geese leaving their night time roosts on The Wash. After the walk, we go dow...

Sea breezes

Peter J James

On my childhood trips to the seaside, which often included Hunstanton, I was told to breathe deeply because the ozone would make me a big, strong boy and was generally health giving. It’s a nice story and one that was widely believed. Unfortunately it turned out to be completely false. Air, at sea level, contains vanishingly small amounts of ozone. You would probably inspire more of the stuff by standing near a photocopier than on the beach. Alternatively you could ascend int...

q. I have had thread for years can they be treated?

a.     Thread veins are the fine red spider type veins that appear on legs and sometimes on the face. Yes they are very successfully treated. However, one must consider that they did not appear over night similarly they will not disappear over night; it is a slow process but...

Shirley's story

A few years ago I was living a double life - on the outside - a happy wife of a professional man who was holding down a good job, however in the privacy of our home a life of despair, shame and loneliness because of my husband's drinking. The extent of my loneliness, depression and low self esteem became unbearable and although I sought help nobody seemed to be able to understand.

I felt ashamed to speak to family or friends, however eventually I plucked up the courage to ring Alcoholics Anon...

Winter escape from telemark

Part 2

Early in the morning of 16 November, Einar Thronsen, who was responsible for the next stage of the escape, travelled to Rjukan, where Paulsson met him before they went to the hut to collect the four evaders. Thronsen had managed to 'borrow' the Norsk Hydro car used for local journeys, and Bakke Svendsenj drove the party to Gransherad, where they were due to meet a contact. Thronsen and the four men had a nerve-racking time on arrival since the contact failed to appear on time, and Sve...

Little memories of a seaside childhood

Hunstanton Amateur Dramatic Society

Norman C Whye

Hunstanton, in those distant days, was blessed with a large grandiose Town Hall, built in 1896, and opened by the Countess of Cottenham, and the building has not altered much in construction, but in my earlier times used to incorporate shows and theatrical productions, some of them professional, and it was not long before my elderly grandmother suggested that Mother and I accompanied her to see a production of the light Opera by Sir William

Mayor's report

Cllr Peter Mallam

Hi everyone; well I am certainly making the most of being Mayor. On 24th September I attended the Downham Market Chamber of Trade Red Carpet Ball which saw me in a dinner jacket and bow tie, a first for a very long time. My glamorous assistant, the Town Clerk, also dressed up to the nines and accompanied me, she even won a raffle prize – 2lb of sausages! We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening and it showed what can be done when a community works together.

Well, here we are five years on from our first edition in November 2005; some things have changed a lot and others not at all but the one thing that has remained constant is the support from the community for the Newsletter. The seagate road saga

Mary Rhodes

The road, the nearest to the beach, was built in 1902/3, but Seagate, a short road of eight houses (not be confused with Seagate Road) was built earlier by the entrepreneur builder and speculator Mr John William Beeton. Much has been written about him and how he named the houses after his daughters, Stella, Kate, Maud and Olive, hoping that another would be born by the time the fifth house was completed. Unfortunately no new little daughter arrived and with some wit he resorted t...
