Warm September brings the fruit, sportsmen..

Joanna

Well what is ahead for us? So far September has been fairly warm and August managed to produce some summery weather too. The fruit seem to be ripening well, I did wonder if the blackberries would be small and full of pips, however the rain we have had recently seems to have filled them out and the birds and the animals are feasting on them as well as the blackstained fingers of the many humans who enjoy blackberry and apple pie. The apple harvest has begun and Katie and Peasegood Nons

RSPB news

Dave Hawkins, Visitor and Publicity Officer.

By the time you read this, the 2010 phase of the Titchwell Marsh Coastal Change project should be reaching its conclusion. This year’s work, which began on 19 July, has mainly involved restructuring the sea wall along which runs the footpath down to the beach. As I write in early September work is running slightly ahead of schedule and we are well on course to restore access to the marshes and beach by the beginning of October.

This just leaves...

Judges at the Anglia in Bloom awards ceremony on 15th September were very pleased with the improvements from last year and remarked particularly on the involvement of the business community in this year’s entry. Hunstanton was rewarded with a Gold Award and also scooped the Best Coastal Resort category for towns with up to 35,000 residents.

Flower of the month

Nick Godfrey-Cole

I must say that this morning I saw something quite amazing! What? I hear you ask. Well like so many townsfolk, I ventured down to watch The Tour of Britain cycle race. What a spectacle. Well done to all the organisers of such a great and well attended event. Hope that similar amounts of people come out to support Christmas Cracker Event, Hunstanton’s own Pantomime and 2011 Carnival next year. These, and all local events take so much time and effort to organise for our ple...

Part of a page from the sage

Dick Melton

Now, what a response I had to the whereabouts of Muffin the Mule in Hunstanton in the fifties. I have come to the conclusion that there must have been at least two of these in Hunstanton, one on the promenade just outside the Blue Lagoon near Brooke and Sanders café, and another on the corner of The Green outside Guise Brothers gift shop where the Pavilion coffee shop is today.

In one of John Maiden’s reports he mentioned Uncle Dennis and Aunty Jean, the children's’ entert...

Tour of Britain

Work began very early for Town Councillors on the morning of 16th September; starting soon after first light they, together with helpers, began preparing the Green ready for the Tour of Britain to speed through the town. A stage was set up, the bandstand prepared and marquees erected.

Smithdon School and Redgate Juniors provided live music which was much enjoyed by the massive audience gathering on the Green. Students from Hunstanton Infants, Redgate Juniors, The Glebe School, Smithdon and...

Persona

Tobias Nicholls

This autumn will see my biggest challenge grace the stage at the Princess Theatre. ‘Persona’ is the thirteenth production I’ve written for Purple Dreams, the drama group I established in 1999.

When I say ‘biggest challenge’, I mean it. It’s unlike anything I’ve written before. For anyone who hasn’t caught one of my productions at Hunstanton’s Drama Festival, I’m known for my ‘sitcom’ style productions. Usually based around a sofa, I present 45 minutes...

Sandringham Sunday 15th August Guide Dog

The Guide Dog tent stood proud, splendid in Gold and Blue, near to the yellow and blue walks in Sandringham Park woods. Our stall was sponsored by “Sunnyside Vets” of Hunstanton and Roydon.

Out of nowhere from all directions came dogs and their owners, to take part in our annual sponsored walk for guide dogs. Some of the owners had sponsorship and others gave a donation on the day, dogs came in all shapes and sizes and there were family groups an...

Nice people in this town

There are some delicious people in this town!  The weekend before last the Lifeboat Crew were on the high street for the day selling their bits and pieces and collecting money etc, they even had one of their lifeboats on display.  Terry and Di who own the Rendezvous restaurant, who are fast becoming jolly good friends of ours, gave them all free tea and coffee all day, how nice is that!

The other good deed done was last week, I went to my car (silver beetle) park...

Remembrancetide 2010 parade

As I am sure that most people know, the Royal British Legion is the leading the charitable organisation supporting our heroes both serving and ex-service, and their families. Remembrancetide Period runs this year from 30th October to 14th November and it is during this time that the Legion fund raises to obtain the funds to support our heroes and their families.

Last year we held a ceremony at the start of the remembrance period at the war graves in Hunstanton Cemetery and poppy crosses were...

Golden wedding

Stuart ( aka "Wayfarer" ) and Margaret Bellis celebrated their Golden Wedding on 3rd September this year. They first met at Upney Baptist Church in Barking, Essex in 1955. Margaret had recently made a decision and commitment to follow Jesus Christ at an Evangelistic Rally led by Dr Billy Graham at Wembley Stadium in June that year and had subsequently sought out a Baptist Church to learn more about being a Christian. Stuart - then 15 - was already a member there and he said that the very first

In the case of Æþelræd Unræd,he is nick-named literally the “ ill advised” or badly counselled , a pun on the meaning of his name in old English, æðele- ræd meaning "noble-advice." His policies an...

St Edmund's church

I write this on the 11th of September. At our Eucharist this morning we remembered all those who lost their lives on ‘9/11’ We also prayed for those who lost loved ones.

I imagine many of us were shocked, unable to believe what we were hearing this week. A lone pastor from a small church in America was intending to burn copies of the Koran. As I write he seems to have drawn back from doing so, but he seems the type of person who could easily change his mind again, and wreak havoc amidst i...

Baptisms on the beach

Baptism is the original process by which people became Christians. In the book of Acts people asked Peter and the disciples “Brothers, what shall we do?” to which he replied ...

For many years I have covered games at Carrow Road for a variety of publicans - from Match magazine to the Lynn News. However, for the match at home to Barnsley I took the opportunity to get a bit closer to the action by taking a seat in the Lower Barclay Stand - vacated by Steve Millar who sadly had to miss the game because he was in hospital. All those who know Steve will be well aware that hospitalisation is the only thing likely to keep Steve away from the ground on a match day.

David Miliband's visit

Nowadays when the campaign trail usually stops at Cambridge, Norwich or Peterborough, it is easy to forget that North-West Norfolk was once at the heart of the political universe and actually gave the country its first prime minister with Robert Walpole as far back as 1721.

So it came as something of a surprise when Labour Leadership Candidate David Miliband MP came all the way to King's Lynn to speak to local people in St Nicholas Chapel on a sunny day at the sta...

A traveller's tales - by a wayfarer

11 “Home is where .......?”

“An Englishman’s home is his castle” - or so many would like to think. It is certainly a concept that has been with us in some shape or form for centuries. In 1800, the biographer of Henry W. Grady, journalist and writer on the US Constitution, included this line: "Exalt the citizen. .... Teach him that his home is his castle, and his sovereignty rests beneath his hat” Makes me think that some people obviously consider they have a bigger hat than oth...

Let's keep Norfolk really local

Turnstone

The slogan "Keep Norfolk Local" was used by the Leader and Chief Executive of the borough council in their campaign against the Boundary Committee's recommendation for a single council for the whole of Norfolk.

To the cynics in our midst the slogan was interpreted as: "keep us in our jobs" and there was certainly a willingness to spend council tax revenue on challenging the Boundary Committee in the High Court to achieve that objective.

Fair enough, their campaign was s...

A Norfolk man in Amsterdam

Amsterdam’s mizzling rain in no way dampened my enthusiasm but rather whetted it, no pun intended, it both defines and refines its essence. The damp air was welcome after the long journey from London as I trundled a case over cobbles and negotiated pavements in what I hoped would be the general direction of the hotel. It was going to be easy, I had been assured, ‘They all speak English there,’ adding, ‘and they like us,’ as if it was unusual.

So far so good, but wha...

Yet another busy, but thoroughly enjoyable month. August saw me attend the RAF Marham Family Day which was a fabulous day of activity. Hunstanton lawn tennis week

Little memories of a seaside childhood

Norman C Whye

When we first came up to Hunstanton from Heacham, the accustomed method of delivering local orders from the wine and spirits shop was to use a trade bicycle, and I have it on reputable authority that I was taken for rides in the front basket of this vehicle. The old trade bicycle was, like other redundant
