Little memories of a seaside childhood

FISHING TALES

By Norman C Whye

The old pier was an excellent place to spend a days fishing, and us kids were always on it, piles of tackle next to us, and it was only a few minutes to assemble the gear, bait the hook with big juicy lugworms, and cast the lure as far as we could out into the cold, brownish waters of the sea. It seemed best if there was a breeze blowing, to stir up the water, and attract the numerous flat fishes that inhabited the beach, and to tempt them to take the lure a...

Hand aid

By Tony Foster

On Saturday 10th April Hunstanton Concert Band launched an Appeal to raise £30,000 to buy a ‘bionic’ style artificial hand for its lead trombone player, Becky Palmer.

Becky was born without a right hand but, despite that, plays trombone, piano, guitar and is a keen and competitive (very competitive her opponents will tell you) tennis and squash player!

The Appeal started with a special concert given in the Union Church, Hunstanton and we would like to thank Rev. Da...

Heacham Scouts

It has been another busy term for us all. We spent an evening discussing Shelterbox, our chosen charity. The Scouts looked at recent disasters where Shelterbox has been able to help, and the sort of aid the charity provides.

Cooking evenings always go well, and this term the Scouts prepared beef or veggie burgers, and cooked them for themselves. No serious injuries were reported..!

We had a good show for the Sport Relief Mile at Bircham Newton on Sunday 21st Marc...

Mr Friend was no friend of mine

 By John Maiden

After more than seven years of incompetent and perverse decisions made by council members and officers, I should have developed some kind of immunity when it comes to football referees when they are guilty of similar unreasonable and irrational behaviour.

Unfortunately, it does not seem to work like that. If anything I am less tolerant now than in the good old days, prior to 2002 when the borough council's deci...

Aladdin was magic for the Princess

By John Maiden

The writer and comedian, Roy Hudd has asked us all to sign an on-line petition to save Hunstanton’s Princess Theatre for future generations. Describing the venue as a “little gem” he urged West Norfolk residents to use it and that is exactly what happened in the run up to Easter when 604 tickets were sold for the five performances of “Aladdin” staged at the Princess by the Lavender Hill Mob Theatre Company (LHMTC).

When Elaine asked me to review the pantomime, I w...

Turned out nice again!

By Turnstone

No, this article has nothing to do with the weather; volcanic ash; promotion for the Canaries; or 'turning out to vote' on general Election Day! But older readers may remember the above headline as the catch phrase of the comedian, George Formby, which could also be applied to recent happenings over the course of one week in April.

On 13th April TURNSTONE informed Lynn News readers of a Town Council Liaison Working Party meeting to be held on 15th April, after being advised that ...

On April 4th Easter Sunday at 9.50 p.m. Yar. CG requested launch of Hunstanton Lifeboat to assist in search for aircraft thought to be in trouble, several persons from different locations had rang the CG stating  that a light aircraft flying in a direction from Hunstanton towards Skegness was billowing black smoke, and then had disappeared, this started a major search in the Wash, two lifeboats, Hunstanton’s Atlantic 75  "DJS Haverhill" and Skegness Mersey class "The Lin...

The difficult early years of Norfolk

By Jim Welham

In 1839 the government accepted that the system of each parish appointing its own constable was no longer an adequate method of enforcing law and order in rural areas. It was an unpaid job, often delegated to the aged and infirm. The County Police Act enabled Justices of the Peace of each county in England to establish Police Forces, ‘for the preservation of the peace, and the protection of the inhabitants.’ The Act was not compulsory, but when 63 out of 84 Magistrates vo...

Olivia and I undertook an intensive 4 weeks training around Hunstanton, this was over and above all the training she had prior to living with me. First the breeder, then puppy walking (those wonde...

.....SWEET, SCATTERS DAISIES AT OUR FEET

By Joanna Fort

As I continue with the old Rhyme it seems that some things don’t change that much, the daisies are all over the verges, if you can cover 6 with your foot then spring has arrived, so says the old country adage. Well that was easy yesterday until the council cutters came along and chopped them off! Why do we like things so neat and tidy? Those who read the Union Church Magazine will have heard this already, the name Daisy comes from a c...

MINISTER OF UNION CHURCH

At the moment the television news programs are full of election reports.  All speeches given by political leaders seem to be passionate pleas for us the electors to see the future of Britain through their eyes and their understanding of how the country needs to be run efficiently and for the good of all the people.  Each one saying that the others are not to be relied upon, and claiming that their calculations of the countries’ finances do not add up or make p...

Easter to pentecost

Daniel Holland, Assistant pastor,

The Way

Last month on Easter Sunday a group from The Way and other Christian friends gathered on the bandstand to proclaim and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The chilly ‘spring?’ winds swirled around us but could not sweep away our praises. Observing the faces that passed by I thought some reflected a question; ‘what have these people got to be so happy about?’

We believe that the resurrection of Jesus, the third day after he was crucifie...

Location, Location

Regarding Mr Maiden’s comments about the location of the new middle school.  It would make far more sense for the new middle school to been situated on the over large Smithdon site.  Children that are moving through the education system can often be disturbed by the move to ” big school “. They go from being the oldest in the school to the youngest. All the stages that they have achieved to reach that position are washed away and they are expected to start again. The process can distur...

Monthly Talks - On 2nd March, Mr. Peter Wakefield from Rail Futures presented a convincing case for building 10 miles of new railway to link Bedford with the East Coast Main line at Hitchin.  This new piece of railway and rebuilding of some existing line would permit through trains to go from Norwich and Ipswich via Milton Keynes and Oxford to Swindon.  In so doing it would provide an East-West link with 6 important North-South routes. In addition, he discussed possibilities...

Whither fixed interest?

By Robin Sainty of IFA Corporate Ltd

2009 was a banner year for fixed interest funds with quite extraordinary returns, which are unlikely to ever be repeated. I predicted in my end of year analysis that the fixed interest market was overheated and that a significant correction was likely. The level of quantative easing carried out by the Bank of England was not good news for gilt funds and corporate bond funds, even those concentrating on the investment grade sector were coming off a year o...

 6  On the Road

“The rolling English drunkard made the rolling English road...” - at least that was the opinion of G K Chesterton in his famous poem. Each verse ends recalling a tortuous journey such as - “The night we went to Birmingham by way of Beachy Head!”

Great news - the work started on our new cattery on 24th March!   The ground work should be finished in three weeks, weather permitting, ready for building to start.   At the moment we have enough finance for two of the three units to be built, and that work should take about four months.   We are still desperately fund-raising for the third unit, building of which can be delayed if we don't reach our target in time.

Some more good news!   Our fund-raising for the cattery h
