OCT 11 Lavender Hill Mob Theatre Company
Sandra Hohol
‘Ooh, Heaven is a Place on Earth’ by Belinda Carlisle was one of the songs from the 1980’s medley which the Lavender Hill Mob youngsters sang at their latest show at the beginning of September and the Corn Exchange was certainly that!
From the nightmare of manoeuvring sixty children and adults on and off stage at various times for two hours in ‘cosy’ dressing rooms, green room and rear stage of the Princess Theatre, to the dream of a vast amount of comfortable open space within the Corn Exchange! ‘Onwards and Upwards’ went down a storm at Kings Lynn with our emails and phones buzzing with phenomenal comments about the youngsters performances – and these were not from the parents (they already know that their children are stars!). They were from visitors, King’s Lynn residents, critics and generally people who had come to see a show but did not know what to expect! There were dramas from various groups, the ‘littlies’, the ‘middlies’ and ‘teenagers’, not to mention the adults’ dance plus their ‘gossip’ sketches!
There was also the chance to see the award winning war time drama, ‘Wish Me Luck’ together with songs and dance routines from different age groups. The roof was almost raised as everyone joined in, to hits of the 80’s which was met with tumultuous applause, ovations and encores! Our phones were buzzing, but everyone was buzzing from the atmosphere and reception they received for several days afterwards. As always there are those who had never been on stage before and some are now seasoned actors – and I am not talking about the adults!
Actor Adam Rayner, Lavender Hill’s first Patron who had just flown in from America met the children after the show as did the Borough Mayor and Mayoress at the Interval. Everyone was so thrilled it all went so perfectly. Roll on the next show…..19 May 2012! Dick Whittington (with a twist!!)
Many thanks to all involved – backstage, front of stage and beyond - too numerous to mention but without whom the children and young adults would not be able to achieve what they do!
