SEP 10 THE CROSS ON THE GREEN
Gordon Tanner, Leader of The Way CF
The Ordnance Survey map of the area designates the pillar outside the tourist information office as a cross. However I read a book about twenty years ago entitled ‘The History of Hunstanton’ that threw major doubt as to whether it had ever been a cross. The book suggested that it had originally been located in Snettisham, and was moved to first Old Hunstanton and then to its present location in the past centuries. Whether or not that was ever a cross, there was certainly a cross on The Green last September – well, actually over the Green.
The Way was hosting a team of trainees from King’s Church, Durham for a week. As part of our week we moved our Sunday morning service to the bandstand on the Lower Green. The students ran the service with elements of worship, dance, drama and a short preach. As we looked on our attention was drawn to the cloud above us. It was distinctly in the form of a cross.
Though the winds were blowing a bit – you can see the wisps of cloud trailing from the main section - the cloud itself remained there until we had finished our service.
The team will be with us again in the week 13th to 19th September. Maybe they’ll speak to you on the street or knock on your door. They will be taking assemblies at the first and middle schools.
If the weather is OK we plan to hold our service on the bandstand again. We can’t promise what God will do this year, but we are sure it will be exciting. Why not come along and see for yourself? Don’t take my word for it!
