MAR 10 REV.DAVID HULSE MINISTER OF UNION CHURCH

I wonder if everyone is getting excited about the coming election!  Maybe politics is not the most scintillating subject on our list of favourite things to think about or do.  Are we tempted to be a little more thrilled at the thought of this Summer’s Football World Cup from South Africa being on our television screens taking up lots of peak-time viewing in June?

There is one subject that ties them both together.  Much media time has been devoted to the moral values of the main players.  The expenses scandal simply will not go away.  Many voters are concerned about the moral integrity of those who are offering themselves to represent them in Parliament. An honourable and Godly basis for how people live together in society.  Not too long ago General Elections were based upon how the lives of the electorate would be affected by manifestos reflecting the policies of the candidates’ political parties but in today’s politics the spotlight is firmly focused upon the honesty and trustworthiness of those seeking election.

The sacking of the England Football Team’s captain has had much media coverage.  There are those who argue that what John Terry does on the pitch is a separate issue to his private life. Others maintain that he has a duty as the national team’s leader to maintain an acceptable life based upon a good standard of morality. Naturally I do have my own opinions but I am not going to venture in this article to act as judge on any of these issues. In a recent interview Rt Hon Ann Widdicombe the retiring MP for Maidstone and the Weald extolled the value of the Ten Commandments as a code for everyday living, the best guide for communities to enjoy a fulfilled and contented life.  The Ten Commandment are found in the Bible, Exodus chapter 20 verses  1 to 17.   I will leave you with the words of Jesus found in Matthews Gospel chapter 22 v 37 & 37   "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbour as yourself.”
