MAR 10 NEWS FORM GLEBE HOUSE SCHOOL

By John C. Crofts, Headmaster

 National Youth Choir

In December auditions were held all round the country for places in the prestigious National Youth Choirs.  We were delighted to hear that 11 year old Grace Thomas, who lives in Hunstanton and whose family is well known in the town, had been awarded a place in the Girls’ Choir for 11 – 16 year olds.  Grace’s singing teacher Claire Bloor, who recently founded the Hunstanton Community Choir, said, ‘I am delighted for Grace.  She has a stunning voice and could go a long way with her singing.  She is a hard worker and is always open to try new musical styles.’  Grace’s first course with the Girls’ Choir will take place this Easter and will end with a concert, joint with the Boys’ Choir, in Coventry Cathedral.  We very much hope that she will enjoy the experience and that in a few years time we will see her follow in the footsteps of another former Glebe pupil, Katie Hewson (17), now a pupil at Norwich High School, into the Youth Choir itself.

Charity

The School Council has selected the PACT Animal Sanctuary at Hingham as their charity for this year and is busy planning fund raising events to help this worthwhile cause. George Rockingham, the founder of the charity, recently visited the School to talk about caring for animals and the work of the sanctuary.

Support for other worthy causes is always encouraged and the plight of the people of Haiti led the Headmaster to give every pupil a tube of Smarties, which he asked them to return full of money to be sent to the Disaster Emergency Committee.

Astro

After a few months, a lot of snow and thanks to the generosity of a number of people, we have finally been able to complete the laying of the new astroturf pitch and cricket nets, which will enhance not only the School sport but also provide an excellent home for the Eagle Sports Academy.  Under Head Coach, Sarah Radley, the ESA meets each Saturday morning between 10 and 11.30am for hockey coaching in the winter months before moving on next term to cricket and athletics.

Jonnie Leach

On Friday 29th January, despite yet another snow fall, we were visited by Jonnie Leach who talked about his struggle with drugs and alcohol until, nine years ago, faced with only six months to live, he decided to take charge of his life.  Jonnie spoke very honestly to our older children in the afternoon and then to parents and friends of the School in the evening, explaining how, from a comfortable middle class family of five, he had found himself dependant on one substance after another.  His message about peer pressure and the need for parents to keep open channels of communication with their children was effectively made and everyone left with a deeper understanding of the issues.

Evening Classes

In addition to ballroom and salsa dancing classes on Monday and Thursday evenings, yoga on Monday evening and pilates on Wednesday mornings we are pleased to now be hosting the Hunstanton Community Choir on Tuesday evenings and hope this will go from strength to strength.  Already fifty strong, and with its first concert booking for St George’s Day at the Princess Theatre, new members are always welcome.

Car Boot Sales

These popular events will resume, in conjunction with the Hunstanton Lions, on Sundays and some Bank Holidays
