FEB 10 LYNN HUMANISTS

By Edwin Salter

Do you enjoy a thoughtful discussion? It could be over an afternoon cup of tea or in a small evening meeting where comments are listened to. Even serious topics can be tackled in a hopeful and cheerful spirit.

Past themes for the local humanist group have included education, freedom, climate – big issues but we can begin to understand them better. If you are interested in such matters, then Lynn Humanists might suit you. It’s not necessary to have humanist beliefs to attend, though to be honest if you are a church-goer with a definite faith you will probably be more comfortable with the reassurances of religion.

The recent autumn theme was Caring and the next series of open meetings will be on the roles of women, half the world often dominated by the other half. Speakers have a range of beliefs, religious or otherwise, but often very little time is spent debating faith. Rather the emphasis is on appreciating this life and how to make it better.

Some members are involved with community activities and charities, others write, all simply try to live happy and useful lives. We enjoy the freedom of being able to think aloud.

Many people who reply to the census question about belief by answering Christian don’t so much have a firm faith in god and heaven as a general respect for tradition and an ideal of kindness. Hunstanton and Heacham have many such, but even so over a thousand people declare that they have no religious belief at all (and perhaps nowhere to express the beliefs they do have).

As well as meetings and social events, Lynn Humanists offer counselling, a distant communication group for active minds, and introduction to funeral celebrants and the national organisations (BHA and NSS). If it might add something to your life, why not phone us (on 07818870215) and see how it goes. Making contact requires no commitment, no subscription, and involves no hassle.
