JAN 10 THE WAVE

Thank you, all Newsletter readers who showed an interest

and wished me well.  This poem is for you.

What a day!

When thirty thousand came to Grosvenor Square!

Charities, pressure groups, nature lovers embracing,

Wanting a real climate deal that is fair.

Travelling in from so many different places,

Spending scarce time and money to be there.

More than a few even painting their faces!

(We didn’t, it’s true, but we did wear bright blue).

Babies on backs and toddlers in buggies,

Teenagers, surfers and hippy tree-huggies,

Children who’d made their own posters, and then

An assortment of middle-aged women and men.

A trio of nuns being pedalled along

In a tri-shaw from Oxfam, by a hunk, young and strong!

Elderly gents sipping tea from their flasks,

A jazz band and drummers, stilt-walkers in masks.

And all carried placards urging leaders to think,

To make right decisions, bring us back from the brink,

To keep us all safe, to make the world fair –

THAT’S what we were asking, in Grosvenor Square.

Then, with man-powered mechanical models and all

We marched down Piccadilly, Pall Mall and Whitehall.

A huge wave of people which just flowed and flowed,

Surrounding Westminster and filling the road.

We were waving and cheering as Big Ben struck three,

And what was especially pleasing to see,

As we did our bit, as we made our stand,

Quietly supporting us – Ed Miliband.
