JAN 10 DAVID J HULSE MINISTER OF UNION CHURCH
At the moment many people in Hunstanton are preparing to enjoy Christmas. Presents are being wrapped and food bought in. By the time you read this article many of us will be fed up with rich food, determined to get out of our armchairs and do things to make us feel better.
Some of us may make New Years Resolutions with a determination to fulfil all that we have promised ourselves. I found a list of typical resolutions and maybe one or two of these may very well reflect our wishes list for 2010.
After the excesses of the Christmas feasts and the inactivity that it so tempting to enjoy the human body can feel sluggish and in need of diet and exercise. Number one is “Lose Weight and Get in Better Physical Shape.” Number two is “Stick to a Budget” and put finances in order. Number three is. “Reduce our debt” adapting new habits of self discipline would be great. Fourthly “Enjoy More Quality Time with Family and Friends” A desire that many will agree with. Family is an important feature of our society, yet it so easy to take it for granted. Fifth is “To Find My Soul Mate.” Loneliness is a problem for some and to find the most wonderful person to share life with is good. I was little surprised that more than half way down the list is the old potato “To Quit Smoking”. During a financial down turn number seven indicated that there are those who would like to “Find a Better Job.” What about number eight? “To Learn Something New” to expand our horizons and maybe go back to college or learn a musical instrument would certainly change our lives for the better. A popular non-selfish resolution comes in at number nine. “To Volunteer and Help Others” and focus on how we can serve our community. Finally number ten is “Get Organised.”
It is also true that the vast majority of New Years Resolutions are broken by February 2nd.
A few words of advice that I found are to make Goals not Resolutions and make them achievable. Try to set goals that are important to you and not always what others expect of you. There is a verse in the Bible that would serve as achievable goals. Words of the Apostle Paul to the Philippians 4 v 8 & 9 “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honourable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you” (NLT)
A Happy New Year To You All.
