DEC 09 TANGO

By Joanna Navarre

Mention dancing ‘Tango’ and a myriad of film images spring to mind. There’s the comedy tango: Joe E. Brown in ‘Some Like It Hot’ dancing with Jack Lemmon, complete with rose between the teeth; Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies: the smouldering, sultry moves of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in Mr and Mrs. Smith; Raoul Julia and Angelica Houston in The Addams Family. Film-makers liberally use tango as a symbol of ‘passion’, but did you know that tango has just been awarded ‘World Heritage’ status as an art form by UNESCO? Or that East Anglia has it’s own vibrant social Tango scene and that this dance of chic Buenos Aires urbanites is now being danced at a venue near you?

Previously if you wanted to learn tango you would have had to travel to Cambridge or Norwich, but a new class and practica is now being run at the Pavilion in Holme Hale, every Tuesday from 8-10pm.

Tango, danced socially, is one of the easiest dances to learn as it is based simply on walking in time to music. It doesn’t require major levels of physical fitness or athletic ability; what it does require is sensitivity to movement, which is why it often appeals those who have a background in Yoga or the Martial Arts. Nor do you need to be young and ‘leggy’; Tango is essentially a ‘grown-up’ dance in its feel and flavour, both of which are enhanced if the performers have what is nowadays termed as ‘life-experience’.

There’s an old saying:  ‘Tango takes five minutes to learn and a lifetime to master’ the only danger is that once you’ve danced it once, you’ll be hooked forever.
