DEC 09 MAYOR'S COLUMN
By Cllr Christine Earnshaw, Mayor of Hunstanton
If it wasn’t for the clocks going back and the cold nights we could ( at the time of writing) think it was still summer. The resort still looks busy at the weekends and the visitors are well catered for with most of the summer attractions still open. Almost every major event has been blessed with fine weather this year; if only it could always be so predictable then our stay-cation industry would be flourishing. But the weather is not and our town has to survive through the winter in hope of another good year. We can help by supporting our local shops and businesses.
By the time this reaches you the Christmas Cracker event will have launched our Christmas season but I hope, when it comes to Christmas shopping, you will have worked out that there is so much on offer here that we really do not need to be drawn to the crawling crowds in the larger towns where, according to Pam Ayres, ‘the shops was full of cheer, tinsel in the windows, and presents twice as dear!’ We have everything here for every age; there’s a large toy shop and a jolly joke; a fabulous florist and food abounds; a specialist wine merchant for the extra special bottle; toiletries a-plenty; a variety of clothes for all ages; materials, crystals, accessories and decorations to adorn the house; and don’t forget your cats and dogs – there really is something for all ages and if Granny wants to take it back then she doesn’t have to go so far. If you’re still not convinced, there are plenty of services and vouchers for a piercing or a painting or a massage or a meal. And there’s still the Sunday Market! Hunstanton Has It!
But there is yet more, Carol Concerts, Seasonal Coffee Mornings and Fairs, Santa’s Grotto in the Town Hall Basement, the Panto, Beauty and the Beast at the Princess Theatre, and please if you haven’t been before do make the effort this year and sign the petitions around the town to save our theatre – and the Christmas Day swim, such fun to watch even more to join in!
Thank you for welcoming me to so many of your functions throughout the year, and for your support for the many events within the town. Now, I would just like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and look forward to meeting you in the New Year.
