SEP 09 HUNSTANTON & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB

By Peter Mills

Our Car Boot Sales at the Glebe School have proved to be a great success this year. There are still some more to go on August 30th and September 6th.  We are glad that we’ve now been able to re-establish these after a “year out”. Both stall holders and visitors have been very grateful for their return.

The raffle for a pair of super “Bottecchia 803” road bicycles may now have sold out by the time this magazine is published, so in the next edition we will be able to tell you who the lucky winner was. If you brought tickets and didn’t win, thank you for taking part, and look out for our next raffle.

The “Open Bowls Tournament” that we held in early August was a great success. Last year this was marred by really bad weather, but this year the weekend was bathed in sunshine and a great time was had by all. The winners of the “Pairs” on the Saturday were Rod Foster and Jean Neighbour and on Sunday the “Triples” were won by Lee Driver, Peter Dennis and Neil Kenny, with the runners-up being Dave Ruddle, John Pesci and Glen Pooley. Our Charity fund was increased by nearly £500.00 by this event proving that you can still enjoy yourselves, and help others at the same time. Our thanks again go to Old Hunstanton Social Club who allowed us to use their facilities, and especially Dave Shaw for preparing the greens each day. This year we have very special thanks to go to three small girls, Tanika, Jasmine and Hayley. Unbeknown to us on the Sunday they decided to ‘paint finger nails’ for a small charge and presented us with well over £10.00 for our funds after the bowls finished. Some men were so pleased with their fingers that their nails were still painted days afterwards!!!. Thank you so much girls.

On Saturday September 12th we are helping the “Naval Association” run a “Race Night” at Old Hunstanton Social Club. There may still be some tickets available so telephone Ray Kent at the Club if you are interested (01485 532700). We have some other events planned for later this year and details will be in the next edition.

At the end of the year we are again holding a “Craft Fair” in the Town Hall to coincide with our “Grotto” there. The dates are December 12, 13, 19, 20 and Christmas Eve. If you would like to book a stall please call 01485 533108.

In our “200 Club” raffle the August winners were 1/ V. Duggard, 2/ A.R. Hannay, 3/ Mrs.P.Burville and 4/ Richard Bird. Congratulations to you all.

As well as running all these events for charity we still enjoy ourselves elsewhere. In August, as a club, we visited the S.H.A.R.P. excavation in Sedgeford and were shown round by the site director Gary Rossin. This was an extremely informative evening, and we thank Gary for his time. Next year we hope to repeat this to see what else they have found.

If you are interested in more information on Hunstanton Lions, and what we do  please let us know and we will be pleased to meet you.

Finally in the August edition of this newsletter we told you about our “Fun Day” for children from schools catering for special needs. We received many letters from the kids of both schools, all hand written and illustrated. Here is a (very) small selection. “Thank you for our Trip to Hunstanton. The ghost train was too scary. I liked the carousel, from Zoe”, Woodfields School. “Dear Mr.Pooley, Thank you for the fish and chips and all the rides. I loved the merry go round it was amazing. The Ghost train was scary but the slide was great as well. I also loved the sizzlen, the sea dragon. It was a lovely day and thank you for everything, thank you, Emma”, Ethel Tipple School, and “Dear Lions, thank you so much for our lovely day out at the Fun Fair. I liked going on the bumper cars it was fun and I went on the crazy frog with my friend. It was awesome. We went on it twice and I went on the umbrella ride. Thank you for the fishcake and chips and drink we had, it was yummy, thank you, love from Sarah”.

It’s great to know they enjoyed it too!!!.
