SEP 09 LINSLADE CROQUET CLUB VISIT SUNNY HUNNY
By Terrey Sparks, Chairman
On the week – end 25th/26th July ten members of the Leighton Linslade Croquet Club from Bedfordshire journeyed to Hunstanton for a friendly fixture against the Hunstanton Croquet Club. The visitors were impressed with the home clubs facilities and commented that the 45 games played on the Saturday would have taken them all the week – end on their own two lawns.
Both teams assembled at 10 am on Saturday morning that had dawned on one of the few beautiful days in late July- ‘Sunny Hunny’ was living up to its reputation. After introductions all round and a welcoming drink play commenced. Unfortunately one of the visitors was taken ill the night before and had to withdraw, so the home club’s Chairman Terrey Sparks stepped into the breach and played for the visiting side. The games were mostly very close and were all played in good humour and sportsmanship. The rounds alternated between Doubles and Singles with many going to the 13th hoop. Play finished after 5 pm and after a short respite there was an enjoyable fish and chip supper followed by quiz and raffle. The home club Chairman then announced that even due to his best efforts the visitors had secured a narrow victory by 24 games to 21.
On Sunday morning the visitors and local members enjoyed a pleasant couple of hours playing Richochet – a simple yet intriguing game that certainly helps develop shot accuracy.
So ended an excellent week – end and the visitors left having made many new acquaintances and friendships. This was a first for the home club and the obvious popularity and success of this event hopefully means that more will be arranged in future years.
Hunstanton team members were: David & Susan Boxall, Thelma Betts, Myfanwy Dunfold, Joyce Robbins, Pat Ballie, Mary Coombs, Dennis Buisson, Pat Dawson, Alf Wells, Jean Rhead, and Noelene & Bill Wood – Davies.
