SEP 09 HAPPY NEW YEAR!
from Joy Webb
Yes, the Methodist, like the school year, begins in September. It is a particularly exciting time for us in Hunstanton as we see the building work draw ever closer to completion. Thanks to the hard work of church members and the co-operation of all the workmen involved in this big project, we have been able to carry on with most of our activities - even the monthly church lunch, to the delight of all the regular diners. The next lunch is on 24th September. Carpet bowls will resume on Friday 4th September.
Of course we have had to raise money for the building project but we know that, as Christians, we are also expected to share, to use what God has given us to help those in need. We were determined to carry on Hunstanton Methodist Church’s long tradition of fundraising for a particular good cause each year. Last September, the “Stem the Tide” weekend focussed on climate change. Following on from this, our 2008-9 project has been, through Christian Aid partner CCDB (the Christian Commission for Development in Bangladesh), to help poor people in Bangladesh who are already being affected by more frequent and severe flooding. We aimed to raise £2760 in the year, enough to build ten small but sturdy houses for families who have lost their homes in the floods. On top of everything else, it seemed a tall order, but we have reached our target!
It all goes to show, a church IS about building, but not just the stone, brick, glass and stainless steel of this building; it’s about building new homes too. Not just building a new Link but new links; building up people, building confidence, building communities.
