Girl Guiding

Hunstanton Brownies have had another busy active term, we started off with a party to say goodbye to 6 brownies going up to guides.

As part of Girlguidings Centenary Adventure 100 challenge, we flew high by making kites and then the following week we went high by having a ride in the Umbrellas at the fairground, then we went on the beach and flew our kites to the lovely backdrop of the sun setting over the sea.

We then had a visit to t...

Rounce & Evans property management

By Luke Loades – Director/Proprietor

Rounce & Evans Property Management Ltd are delighted to announce the opening of their new Lettings Office in Hunstanton.

Rounce & Evans have been an established local Estate Agent for 20 years. During that time, they have always had a residential lettings department but as the letting market grew busier, it was evident that they could no longer run the lettings side of the business as an 'add on’ to the Estate Agency. Therefore in 2003, Ro...

Tango

By Joanna Navarre

Mention dancing ‘Tango’ and a myriad of film images spring to mind. There’s the comedy tango: Joe E. Brown in ‘Some Like It Hot’ dancing with Jack Lemmon, complete with rose between the teeth; Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies: the smouldering, sultry moves of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in Mr and Mrs. Smith; Raoul Julia and Angelica Houston in The Addams Family. Film-makers liberally use tango as a symbol of ‘passion’, but did you kn...

Stress-less!

By Chris and Clare Tansley

Coastal Vets

Sit back and relax next to the warm fire, put your feet, and snuggle into your favourite chair - so we can have little chat about stress.... We've recently had Hallowe'en and Guy Fawkes night, which seems to get longer every year, and we are soon to have Christmas and New Year fireworks, family visits, long drives and big changes of routine. This is on top of the usual thunderstorms, house moves, kennel and cattery stays, visits to the vet and the ...

A page from the sage

Dick Melton

Well now, another year has gone by in Sunny Hunny! When I first started writing for the newsletter, four years ago, I thought whatever shall I write about each month but I need not have worried because, with the help of the people of Hunstanton, there is always plenty to say!

On the 13th October at a meeting at the Town Hall it was said that a small piece of one of the legs of the Hunstanton Pier, now placed in a small memorial garden on the Lower Green near the promenade, is...

The wave

By Joy Webb, local organiser for Christian Aid.

If you attended the recent excellent exhibition in the Town Hall about The Wash and North Norfolk Shoreline Management Plans, you will know how climate change is likely to impact on the Hunstanton area in the next 50 years or so.  How do we protect homes and businesses, valuable agricultural land and sites of great importance for wildlife from rising sea levels and stormier, more unpredictable weather?

In other parts of the world, peopl...

The vicuna

By Leonard Potter

Much has been written about the ex-trawler and target ship ‘The Sheraton’ but little or nothing about our most famous and historical wreck the barquetine 120ft Vicuna which can be seen at low tide off Holme-next-the-Sea; the story of which is as follows:

Vicuna 6th March 1883 Voyage  -  Laurvig, Norway to Humber, carrying ice.

On 6th March 1883 whilst at anchor in the Humber it parted with cable in a gale. The ‘Victor’ steaming off Germ...

A day in the life of my job

The alarm rings loudly and is placed strategically across the bedroom in order to ensure that I get up to turn it off. Another 6am start.

Monday, Monday, Monday, always guaranteed to be busy. Revelation of events that have occurred during the weekend. The day when weekly reports have to be compiled and sent to our line managers. Occupancy levels need to be reported. And so the week begins...

Letters to the editor

“CASH IS KING!”

I must have written a few hundred letters to the papers in my time and signed dozens of petitions, but truth be told, I can't think of one that has changed anything.

Which is why I felt that once the rebuilding of the amusement arcade on Hunstanton Green began the cause was lost. When money and local government get together protesters are powerless.

Much though I admire John Maiden for his persistence and energy, he and others put their faith in justice, fairness an...

A traveller's tales

“It was as if someone had switched on the light.”  The speaker was a very well-educated man of the Gban tribe in central Côte d’Ivoire - the former French Ivory Coast.  A schoolmaster, fluent in French as well as several of the local languages - of which there are 64 in Côte d’Ivoire. As a man of education and standing in his community, he is frequently called upon to read the Bible in the Catholic Church he attends. So, you might thi...

A day in the life of a king's lynn samaritan

06:00  From an upstairs window, Malcolm could see the sun rise over the town. He and Angela looked tired. It was not surprising really. They were just coming to the end of a four-hour night duty for The Samaritans. Malcolm had taken a two-hour call in the early hours from a depressed young mother who could not sleep. She had lost a baby through cot death and now could not bear to close her eyes in case anything happened to her new-born baby. Fear and fatigue had given way to despair. Finally ...

A visit to the beach, and the hand grenade

 By Kingsley Pearce

Shortly after the end of the war on a nice summer day my mother decided that we should go onto the beach for the afternoon.  After lunch, all that I had to do was to put my cap on and carry a spade.  In those days wearing a cap was, of course, mandatory, and apparently a necessary piece of my every day equipment.. Although I could never see the purpose in always having to wear a cap when leaving the house, the reason given to me for doing so was a simple one.  Your c...

Proposed closure of princess theatre

Following reports in the media concerning the possible closure or curtailment of programme at the Princess Theatre, I was asked by the Princess Theatre Club committee to write to the Borough Council expressing the Club’s concern. Mayor's column

By Cllr Christine Earnshaw, Mayor of Hunstanton

If it wasn’t for the clocks going back and the cold nights we could ( at the time of writing) think  it was still summer.  The resort still looks busy at the weekends and the visitors are well catered for with most of the summer attractions still open.  Almost every major event has been blessed with fine weather this year; if only it could always be so predictable then our stay-cation industry would be flourishing.  But the weather is ...

The Great Escape

Humans do some very cruel things to their fellow creatures, as well as to members of their own species. However, from time to time I hear of an act of kindness by humans to animals that goes some way towards restoring faith in my fellow man.

The latest such incident came to my attention when I was asked to date and value a record (45 rpm) entitled "The Canaries in Song - backed by the Chic Applin Band." I am sure someone ...

It’s that time of year again, a few weeks ‘til Christmas, the nights are well and truly drawn in and the blustery winds are stripping the trees naked of their leaves once again, so what better way to spend your dark evenings at home wrapped up warm in front of the fire watching easy watching television and just chilling, but with everyone having such busy lives these day wouldn't it be nicer on a Wednesday especially to visit Chives in the High Street to sit, relax and...

A good book for christmas?

By Alan Warren

I have read many books about science and religion over the years but this is something rather special. 18 eminent scientists have each written a short and readable chapter about their faith and their work. So the book is more about personal experiences than clever arguments and is, at times, quite moving  -  such as when John Wyatt, the distinguishes Neonatal professor and consultant, admits to weeping with the parents as he held a dead baby in his arms. Two UEA profess...

Snapshts from Hunstanton the St Edmund's church

By John Smith

Saturday 7th August 1937 saw the demise of one of Hunstanton’s iconic  buildings, when the St. Edmund’s Café on the North Promenade was totally destroyed in a huge blaze. The building which was owned by the Urban District Council was leased to Mr. W. H. Brooke. Built around 1870, it had been extensively used as a restaurant from around 1927, in the days when a meat and two veg was considered an absolute necessity for a Sunday - and a weekday - lunch for the holiday makers....

Chocolate heaven

By Michael Prince of Chives

You know, it’s a constant battle trying to eat healthily. One which I am losing fast. The government is trying to make the nation eat healthy, but they are still allowing the packaging on sweets and chocolate to look so, so inviting. I try to avoid chocolate at the supermarket, but it’s saying in a big loud voice “EAT ME”. Looking all shiny and lovely.

The other day I was walking around Tesco’s and I was doing all right. A very healthy looking shoppi...

Feeding garden birds

Last winter was one of the hardest we have had for many years, forcing even more birds than normal into our gardens looking for food and water to help them survive the long cold winter.

Putting out food and water to help wild birds survive the winter enables them to enter spring fit and healthy and then to go on and raise healthy chicks next summer! Feeding garden birds is also an excellent way to kick start a child’s...
